Perm:
Perm is a city of west-central Russia on the Kama River in the foothills of the Ural Mountains. A city of roughly 1.2 million inhabitants, it is a major administrative, industrial, scientific, and cultural center.
The city, founded in 1568 as the village of Lagoshikha, started to rapidly develop as an industrial center with the founding of a copper-smelting plant in 1723. Soon after it became a center for Russia’s military manufacturing. During Soviet times, because of its military industry, it was a closed city to foreigners and Russians alike.
Perm is internationally known as the name for the geological period in which the Ural Mountain Range was formed, 45 million years ago. In contrary to the Urals, Perm itself is rather young. The citizens loudly celebrated its 280th birthday in 2003.
